A lamantine is a subspecies of sea cows and is usually seen alone, in pairs or in small groups of half a dozen or fewer animals. From above the surface of the water, the nose and nostrils of the animal are often the only thing that is visible. Sea cows never leave the water, but, like all marine mammals, must breathe in air on the surface. A resting Lamantijn can stay under water for up to 15 minutes, but while swimming it has to come out every three or four minutes.
