The breeding of ornamental koi began in the early 19th century. The Magoi (wild black carp) was introduced to Japan from China, originally as a food source for rice farmers. The patterns and colors of the Asagi were among the first Nishikigoi to be bred. The Magoi black carp occasionally produced offspring with red bellies and sometimes blue scales. Japanese rice farmers then used selective breeding of these slightly more colorful fish and over time the Asagi developed into the beautiful specimens we know today. A high-quality Asagi has a bright white or light blue head with dark blue on the back, accompanied by a contrasting white/light blue net-like pattern. They should have strong red (hi) markings on the cheeks and pectoral fins. They should also have a distinctly red belly that does not extend above the koi's lateral line. • Koi carp can grow to enormous sizes, with some reaching lengths of more than 1.2 meters under ideal conditions. They make wonderful pets and often recognize their owners, allowing them to be hand fed. They thrive in temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, but can survive the winter in much lower temperatures. • In Japanese culture, koi symbolize perseverance, courage and success. They are mentioned numerous times in mythology, often depicted as swimming against the current and transforming into dragons. • Koi are omnivores, but it is advisable to feed them a diet consisting of algae and koi pellets in captivity.
